Upon initiative by the Chios Music Festival and at the invitation of the Berlin State and Cathedral Choir, the Chios Music School visited Berlin last March, taking part in various artistic activities, including a concert tribute to rebetiko at the Berlin University of the Arts (UdK). The choice of repertoire was not at all incidental, as in this way the students underlined the fact that Chios was one of the first cities to welcome refugees from Smyrna during the Asia Minor Catastrophe, and as a melting pot of melodies between East and West, it hosted self-taught musicians of the time, who consequently left their mark on the modern Greek musical sound. As part of the ongoing collaboration between the Chios Music School and the festival, from the very first year of its implementation, the students will present the concert-tribute to rebetiko along with a lecture to approach the historical and sociological dimension of this musical genre.
