Songs of Hope

The Girls’ Choir of the Sing-Akademie zu Berlin, which celebrates 20 years of artistic activity this year, will visit Chios with more than 50 choristers and the conductor, Friederike Stahmer.

Volissos, the place hosting the concert, was at the centre of the devastating fires of the summer of 2025, which affected much of northwestern Chios. However, its historic school building, which houses a kindergarten, a primary school and Gymnasium with Lyceum classes, remained intact. 

As an offering to the wounded parts of the island that persist, the choir sends its own message of environmental sensitivity and resilience. At the Volissos concert, the choir presents works of the choral repertoire which converse with traditional melodies from Greece and Europe. From Mendelssohn and Brahms to Bernstein and Kim André Arnesen, the concert weaves a musical landscape that highlights hope, memory, the power of the soul and nature. The programme will feature the impressive work “Fire”, from the “Elements” cycle by the Canadian composer Katerina Gimon.

From 11 July to 30 August, the same venue is hosting this year’s art exhibition by the contemporary art organisation DEO, entitled “Letter to an Ailing Father”.
