THE WALK: EUROPE

TUE 10 AUG, 19:30

Port & Chios Town

Participation in the international project “The Walk”

Nine-year-old Amal, a symbol of all displaced refugee children who have been separated from their families, will travel 8,000 kilometres in search of her mother and carrying the message “Don’t forget us”. Her journey entitled “The Walk” will start from the Syria-Turkey border and will walk across Chios, Greece, where she will be welcomed by the Chios Music Festival.

Amal arrives to Chios by boat. As she approaches the shore she hears a voice singing to her. Music meets her across the sea. After her boat docks, the local communities of Chios will welcome Amal with the traditional sounds of “Painemata” that involves creating new lyrics inspired by “wishes for a new start” for the occasion of welcoming  little Amal as she takes her first steps in Europe. Celebrating a local tradition that will welcome a new arrival onto the island.

“The Walk” is produced by Good Chance, Stephen Daldry, David Lan and Tracey Seaward in collaboration with Handspring Puppet Company.
